"There is a woman who walks St. Aldates and the Folly Bridge at night. Tonight was the second time I saw her. She mumbles and shuffles, rather well dressed for someone who may be crazy, in a matching long skirt and blouse. She works her hands together and looks at the ground and sort of hunches along. I wanted to know what she was talking about, and if anyone ever listens to her."The ghost of Virginia Woolf?

Kristine

I wondered if she was on a cell phone, one of those concealed ear thingys. =) When I was in college, there was a boy who talked to himself everywhere. We called him, "I'm Not Talking To You," in reference to a comment he made to one of our friends who thought he was addressing her in the cafeteria one day. The next year, there was a girl on campus who had the same habit and whom we promptly dubbed, "I'm Not Talking To You's Girlfriend." I think of them both everytime I see some apparently sane person walking purposefully along, chatting away to no one visible thanks to our friends at Bluetooth. The "I'm Not Talking To You"s of the world were just ahead of their time.

I hadn't thought of that "In Your Ear, No I'm Not Schizophrenic" thingee. Probably more likely than the ghost of Virginia Woolf in a fugue state.
